MSRP for Nissan Skyline GT-R When New

Sean Morris Posted on June 24, 2020

MotoRex US legal R34 GT-R for sale in the USA

The modern Nissan Skyline GT-R sold from 1989 to 2002 was a premium vehicle.  When it was released in 1989, the price was at the upper end of Japanese or JDM cars sold locally.  Since the car was only sold in Japan, other than very limited numbers overseas, the MSRP is in yen.  The yen to dollar conversion rate, while relevant to someone overseas, isn't really relevant if you lived in Japan.

8-21-1989 when the R32 GT-R went on sale, the exchange rate was 142 yen to a US dollar.  In 1989, exchange rates ran from 129 yen, to about 150 yen to a dollar.

4,445,000 yen / 142 yen to a dollar is $31,302 (1989) dollars.  According to one internet calculator $31,302 in 1989, would be the equivalent of $65,157 today. That would be more than a 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8, or a 2020 Toyota Supra.  So by no means was an R32 GT-R an affordable car. It was a fairly exclusive sports car.  That 142 yen to dollar rate, if we used todays 106 yen rate, makes it look even more expensive.  There is a lot of information on the internet about historical exchange rates, and inflation calculators.  Figure out some of the costs of the R33, and R34 GT-R prices when new, based on the information below.

In total 43,937 R32 GT-R were sold.  That includes 560 Nismo cars, 100 Australian delivered cars, 1460 Vspec, 1369 Vspec II, and 245 N1 versions of the cars.
